Tuesdays with Dorie: Dorie’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

February 16, 2010

This week, the Tuesdays with Dorie gang made My (Dorie’s) Best Chocolate Chip Cookies. Thank you Kait of Kait’s Plate for a great selection!

What I did:

  • I cut the recipe in half.
  • I used chopped chocolate: half Trader Joe’s Pound Plus 71% and half Guittard 61% (I used the two chocolates in the interest of using up what I had).
  • I omitted the nuts.
  • I mixed the dough on a Sunday and baked it on a Wednesday. Every time I opened the refrigerator, I saw the dough and thought “what is that?”!

How it went: These were easy to make. I’ve never used chopped chocolate instead of chocolate chips in a cookie before. It was hard to tell when they were done because they were already brown.

How it tasted: I’ll admit I was skeptical. I don’t know why, but I just thought I wasn’t going to like these. I was wrong! The texture is great: crisp around the edges and chewy inside. I like how the chocolate is distributed throughout, and I like the swirly look. My husband first declared these “posh.” Then he said boy, those are good and had another one. Then he repeated that a couple of times.

Would I make this again?: Yes! Gotta love a good cookie. If you’d like the recipe, look on page 68 of Baking: From My Home to Yours, or take a look at Kait’s blog.

  1. Jill -these really look wonderful! So glad your husband enjoyed them – they DO look a little “high brow”! 🙂 Don’t you love TJ’s Pound Plus’s? They’re great – and glad you were able to bake them rather than sample the dough from the fridge (like I have done in the past)!

  2. Your cookies are gorgeous!

    These were utterly delicious!!!!

  3. Love the swirl look! I’ll have to try chopped chocolate.

  4. LOL LOL LOL I love the little insert “what’s that???” I can only imagine you! LOL

In the end, your cookies look great, I’m sure your husband was right and saddly… you didn’t keep the leftover for me, huh?

  5. The chocolate in yours looks delicious! Glad you guys enjoyed these!

  6. Im glad you enjoyed them. I thought this recipe rocked!

  7. Love the marbled look of these! I wasn’t too sure about them either, but liked them. I gave them all away and am really regretting it after looking at all the posts!

  8. Your cookies look amaaaazing! YUM! So glad you enjoyed these! I loved them too!

  9. Love the way the chocolate is swirled through your cookies. Beautiful and very sophisticated looking.

  10. These look really delicious and I prefer chopped chocolate over the chips. And I love lots of nuts.

  11. I do like chopped chocolate! Fun cookie.

  12. That swirl is very posh! I’m glad these were a hit for you!

  13. I can totally see why your husband called these “posh.” The chocolate swirls look absolutely delicious. Thanks for baking with me!

  14. Since these cookies were considered “posh”, I have to wonder – where any of the other spice girls involved? 🙂

Yours look fabulous – no wonder they got such rave reviews!

  15. Your cookies look fantastic! I loved having little bits of chocolate scattered throughout the cookie, too. Definitely a keeper.

  16. Glad you liked them so much!

  17. Great photo! Glad you liked these. They were a bit too flat for me. I like a thicker cookie.

  18. Awesome, glad you guys loved them! And aren’t Pound Plus bars the best? I buy them by the cartful and use them for everything. But I was bummed their price went up recently. Boooo.

  19. I liked these too – and you’re right, when the batter is brown, how do you tell when they are – um, browned?

  20. I learn so much from you about chocolate and subbing things, always fun to come and see what’s up over here! The cookies look great, they were a big hit here as the guys love crunchy crispy things! Yours look beautiful. I am taking notes on all you chocolate experts who recommend certain things b/c am clueless on all that. Thanks.

  21. What a beautiful batch of cookies! Hand chopping chocolate for CCC makes a huge difference, doesn’t it?

  22. I’m glad they were a success! They look absolutely delicious!

  23. Glad these were good for you. Have run across several CCC recipes since I posted. And they all look good. Hope I find one soon.

  24. I was too lazy to chop the chocolate, but I agree, they do look posh. I’m glad you liked them. Yours do look good!

  25. They look so good, more sophisticated than the chunky cookies – I must try chopped chocolate.

  26. these weren’t a hit with me, unfortunately, as you read. but i am glad that you and the hubby liked them 🙂

i guess your hubby has a ‘wash, rinse, repeat’ cycle when it comes to cookies: eat, comment, repeat 😉

  27. I think your extended fridge time really made your cookies bake up exceptionally well. It seems like everyone who chilled the dough had better results. Just how do you manage to keep dough in the fridge from Sunday to Wednesday? Every time I would open the fridge I would be eating a big dollop of it rather than wondering what it was. In fact, I am sure I would be making extra trips to the fridge just to snitch dough.

  28. Those cookies r just gorgeous!
