Tuesdays with Dorie: I have a really good excuse

April 13, 2010

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at the photo of Swedish Visiting Cake in Baking: From My Home to Yours. Any time I flip through the book, that page seems to pop up. So why didn’t I make this delicious-looking cake, selected by none other than Nancy from The Dogs Eat the Crumbs? Because our house was hit by lightning last week. Seriously. It’s been a heck of a week, and although our kitchen is up and running, I haven’t been in there a lot, except to pull out the blender and make some margaritas!

In summary, it was really, really scary, but everyone is fine. A few photos are below. If you’d rather hear about the recipe, see Nancy. She’ll have the recipe on her site and she won’t steer you wrong with her review!

This wall exploded and the firemen had to open it up

More wall chopping

This is where the fire was

This was our thermostat

It broke some windows and messed up the trim

It even dug a big trench in our front yard!

  1. What a lousy excuse Jill. šŸ™‚ Holy Batman! I’d say that no cooking or baking was required – sheesh! Hopefully everyone is safe and sound – I can imagine how horrible that must be to go through – have another Marg. on me! Take care!

  2. OH! MY! GOODNESS! I’m floored. I hope all is well… everyone has gotten over the fright! WOW.

Okay, well… yeah, I guess that’s a good enough reason!

(you do have to make the cake though, as it was memorable!)

  3. Yikes that would be so frightful. Im thankful no one got hurt or the fire was worse.
Someone needs to make you this cake!!

  4. This scared the daylights out of me when I saw the pics on facebook-I’m just so glad that you are allright!!!!

  5. Oh my word! That would be absolutely terrifying! Hope you get things put back together soon. This cake is so simple and tasty…hope you get to make it before long.

  6. Woah!! That’s out of this world crazy! Hope you can get the house back in order soon. I’m glad you chose Margaritas as your one and only thing to make since the incident. That made me laugh!

  7. Oh my gosh, totally crazy. So glad you’re all okay and it wasn’t too horrible! Where do you live?
You’ll for sure have to make this cake sometime when things are back to “normal”. It’s better than it looks–really good actually!

  8. Unbelievable!!! I keep looking at the pictures in amazement. If you were my neighbor, I would have brought you some cake.

BTW, I am aware my TWD post does not show up in the reader. I have been experimenting. Decided to put it on a separate page and link to it through my sidebar. Now that we have the LYL page, it really works out well.

  9. Oh my gosh – that’s so scary!! I’m glad you were all ok!

  10. Oh my! Those are some scary-looking photos! That happened at my aunt and uncle’s farmhouse one summer when I was visiting and it sounded like a bomb exploding (it was actually the plaster exploding off the wall). Glad you are okay, and the margaritas are a good choice. Try this cake, though, when you need some solid food–it’s fantastic!

  11. My goodness, I’m glad you are okay – that looks so scary. I know it can be hard to turn back on TWD recipes, but the Swedish Visiting Cake is a good one to ease you back in the kitchen: simple and comforting.

  12. I hope that the repairs are going well and that you’re not too frazzled!

  13. wow–i’m glad that you’re safe! i cannot believe the damage that did!

cake, schmake! you have bigger things to worry about right now. best of luck in getting everything fixed. i’m sure we’ll be seeing you in the kitchen as soon as things are back to normal!

  14. Oh, come on!! You’re going to let a little lightening strike keep you from baking. FOUL!!!

Just kidding of course. Lucky you not to have had the whole thing burn up. Glad all is almost okay.

  15. WOW. That is the BEST excuse I’ve ever heard. I showed the photos to my husband and he said he found them “shocking.” Har har. So glad you’re okay, and hopefully the house will recover soon. Best wishes!

  16. holy moly! scary!

  17. Under those circumstances, I’d say that margaritas were your best plan! Yipes, that was a major strike. We had one that scared the daylights out of us (well it was at night when we were asleep, but whatever) and it did very little damage compared to your pictures. The shot of the ground is amazing. You’ll get to the cake, and I think you’ll find it comforting!

  18. Thank God no one’s hurt! Phew!
You can always bake the cake later…..and I know you’ll enjoy it!
    Stay safe and take care.

  19. I’m not sure what I envisioned your good excuse was going to be when I read the title, but it sure wasn’t this…OMW how frightening. Hope all is in rights asap! And, make the cake to celebrate, because it’s a celebrating kind of cake!
