Tuesdays With Dorie: Coffee Break Muffins

September 21, 2010

This week, my fellow Tuesdays with Dorie bakers made Coffee Break Muffins. Muffins with coffee in them – what a great way to start the day!

Would you believe me if I told you that this chocolate-free recipe was selected by Rhiani of Chocoholic Anonymous? It would be easy to add chocolate to these, and I’m sure a lot of TWD bakers did.

What I did: I made the full recipe, baked ’em up in the evening, and brought them to work the next day.

How it went: Muffins are so easy! These were no exception to the “muffins are easy” theory.

How it tasted: I liked these a lot. They’re really tender, have just the right amount of cinnamon, and I don’t think they taste very much like coffee, despite all the coffee in them. My boss had one and liked it a lot and also didn’t think it tasted like coffee. We’re both coffee drinkers. My husband ate one and thought it was OK, but declared it an “adult” muffin and added that he likes “kid” muffins. Fair enough. He’s not a coffee drinker.

I must note that these have zero sex appeal. They have a good personality and sparkling sense of humor, but they need to draw some attention to themselves. While I don’t think they needed help in the flavor department, they may need a little help in the looks department. Maybe some cinnamon sugar? Perhaps a swirl of icing or chocolate? A feather boa? I brought these to work with the Peanut Butter Crisscross cookies, and the cookies were the star of the show. How can a plain brown muffin compete with  a classic peanut butter cookie? I left early that day, but I’d bet money that the cookies disappeared long before the muffins. Ah, but I brought a few home, two of which are now tucked safely in my freezer waiting to brighten my morning someday soon.

Do you want to make some tender muffins that may or may not taste like coffee? Look on page 15 of Baking: From My Home to Yours, or look here on Rhiani’s blog.

  1. LOL at the “zero sex appeal” comment – you are so right! I am not much of a coffee drinker either, so maybe that’s why these didn’t do it for me.

  2. I put a crunchy topping on mine and that helped. Yours still looks light and fluffy.

  3. Yes, these certainly need a little something extra…chocolate chips transform them. EVen though they’re plain, you made yours look delicious!

  4. a little chocolate definitely adds some sex appeal!

  5. The chocolate definitely upped the sex appeal factor! I couldn’t keep my hands off of those. 🙂

  6. you betcha – chocolate , most definitely.
I made mine into coffee cake with chopped chocolate bars on top! Tia @ Buttercreambarbie

  7. So true with the ‘zero sex appeal’ comment..>i think all the plain brown food needs a theme song or at least a cool napkin.

  8. Your muffins look great!

I don’t know how these would have tasted plain, but I added a cup of semi sweet chips to the batter and then mixed together some cinnamon and sugar and sprinkled it on top-SO stinkin good warm from the oven.

  9. What a neat idea to have coffee in muffins. I think they look delicious!

  10. Yum! I wish I had made mine full size yours looks great!

  11. haha. i agree w/you about the sex appeal…the ones w/choc chips were much better!

  12. “no sex appeal” lol exactly. But they are welcome in my house anytime. You should try them with cocoa. Delish!!!

  13. Raising hand–“I did, I did”. (Added chocolate!) 😉
Looks like one perfect muffin there.

  14. Lol about your husband admitting he likes “kid” muffins! I always think it’s fun to see how quickly treats disappear at work; I left two kinds of cookies in the lunch room yesterday and was not surprised to see the one loaded with chocolate was gone faster.

  15. I’m glad you liked these, I also thought they needed dressing up. In fact, I didn’t even bother tasting them plain, I just skipped right on to the dressing up.

  16. That’s why I used chia tea! Im not a big fan of baked goods with a coffee flavor! Im glad you tried them, they sure look good!!

  17. i agree about the sex appeal. i was ready to pull my hair out wondering how in the hell i was going to make these look…. edible, rather than round brown lumps. BUT it didn’t matter, they were delish and polished off on this side of the computer screen. and i have to make more to stock my freezer as i only got to have ONE!

  18. Ciao !! They were not the sexiest but I found them very very good !!

  19. ooo.. these are certainly plain janes i guess. zero sex appeal, spot on!

  20. Yep, no sex appeal. Couldn’t agree more–even though they tasted pretty good. Not a muffin to take to other people really.

  21. I still want to give this recipe a try. (You can’t have too many muffin recipes!) I was thinking of upping the cinnamon and giving it a streusel. I’ll have to try it out!

  22. I agree; I didn’t find my coffee break muffins too interesting looking either although I must say yours have the perfect muffin shape!

  23. Zero sex appeal…lol. We liked them, even I liked them, the non-coffee drinker. The guys thought maybe next time, chocolate chips inside would be nice…would that give them some extra sex appeal for you? I told them I would accommodate such the next time!
